I am a big fan of nonfiction books. I think part of this reason is due to the fact I have child now and I can’t take the heart-wrenching, deeply emotional fictions that I used to read. Now I really enjoy learning about other’s lives and experiences.
The Magnolia Story and The Love Warrior were two of my recent reads that I read in less than a week each – they were that good. Although very different, both books provided insightful views from two strong women.
First, The Magnolia Story is the first book from Chip and Joanna Gaines – the hilarious and enduring couple from HGTV’s popular show, Fixer Upper. To be honest, I would probably read anything they put out simply because I adore them. What I really liked about this book was that Chip and Joanna’s personalities really shine through in their story of how they got where they were today. Sometimes it’s easy to look at someone’s success and say “well they are overnight successes” but in reality, there is so much more to the story and the journey to get where they are today. I enjoyed Chips humor in the book and I loved Joanna’s mom story and trust in God to follow her heart and trust in the bigger picture. She also shares her drive to have the perfect home but comes around to appreciating making homes livable for families. It made me feel better about my less than glamourous home for sure!
The Love Warrior is a very different kind of story. Glennon Doyle Melton’s story is deeply emotional and raw. She shares her sometimes painful experiences through fantastic writing that keeps you turning pages. Her story broke my heart a little for the pain she went through with her eating disorders and alcohol but at the core of her pain, I believe many people can relate to trying to numb uncomfortable feelings. I commend her on her candor and putting her story out there. Through bearing her soul to others, she is opening the door to hard conversations and helping people know they aren’t alone in their struggles.
I’d love to pass on these great reads to share their stories. The first person to comment telling me why you would like to read this book, I will send you my copy!
